My Neighbour who has the same Galaxy remembers he had exactly the same problems but has had his for a few years now and cant remember how he found out!
Parkers price guide list the only tdi Ghia x option for that year as being 110 bhp
is there any way I can tell?

I do assume though with the previous owner saying he hasnt seen anything to prove its a 110 its not actually on the log book.

Thanks for that after finding the post Charlie suggested I looked for the "W" ratings which should be either 60 or 80 W the only sticker i can find there said 95W shes at the garage for diagnostics at the minute so I cant get the numbers until it comes back IF i get it back I will post it later looked around in the dark and couldnt find the engine number had so much trouble starting it this morning after the frost didnt have time to look further before it went for the diagnostics. The 110 engine was introduced into vehicles built on or after 03/11/97. The vehicle build code is VD and the engine designation is AFN. Look on the VIN plate which should be attached to the B pillar, passenger side, digits 12 and 13 in the VIN number in the second long box down give the year and month of build. V for 1997 D for Nov.
If you dont have those letters let me know and I will try and decipher the ones you have.Andy.
This is what is causing me the problems it was sold at a 110 and the previous owner told me he couldnt find anything to prove its a 110 but when hes done quotes online its told him its a 110 .....5 insurance quotes online are telling me its a 90 bhp so i dont know where he has been doing his!Worth a try if you dont have the registration documents to hand.
I have now had a quote from Tesco insurance which is the first company to list the 110 as being an option very strange though if its a 90 its more expensive than the 100!
I would just like to thank every one who has tried to help its greatly appreciated

You don't appreciate a lot of stuff in school until you get older. Little things like being spanked every day by a middle-aged woman. Stuff you pay good money for in later life.

If its a red I then it will be a 110.
Alsoi check your cambelt cover.
There should be a sticker on the top with a barcode.
Along with the bar code there will be a code for the engine type.
Mine is a 1Z (early 90hp tdi). All other engine codes are 3 letters like AFN.
Find your 3 letters and do a search.

try your reg number in this...
Motor Insurance database
well thats odd, i put in my old gals reg number and it says that she is a 110bhp..but i know she is a 115
All that comes up with my veccy is that she is on the database.

That will be the 12th and 13th digits because the 1st digit is always *, so from the info in my previous post it appears that your vehicle was built in November 1997 with the 110 being introduced on 3/11/97 which was a Monday.

Thankyou.......... I didnt realise the * was counted! and good news for me as that seems to be a lot cheaper for a turbo! now to get an insurance company that will recognise the right model lol wouldnt have had this problem if the entire log book is handed over to the new owner to send on.That will be the 12th and 13th digits because the 1st digit is always *, so from the info in my previous post it appears that your vehicle was built in November 1997 with the 110 being introduced on 3/11/97 which was a Monday.

You should see the engine type...1Z...AHU...AFN.....quite clearly below the bar code.
Note: Autos will not be 1Z or AHU....they will be AFN's on the early MK1 models.
Strangely I always thought mine was an AFN ( I am sure I seen this somewhere ) but the belt cover says AHU ....I will have to dig out my Log Book...and investigate further.
Probably explains why its flat as a fart...

Your VIN number gives a build date of 27/11/97 but doesn't specify whether it is 90 or 110bhp. If your sticker is missing then you'll need to find the engine number stamped on the block. It will start AHU...(90bhp) or AFN...(110bhp).
The differences between the 90 and 110bhp engines were intake and exhaust system and a variable nozzle turbocharger on the 110bhp.

Vehicle in question built on 27/11/97, which is AFTER 03/11/97, should therefore have a 110!! e&oe

The 90bhp AHU engines were produced from Aug 1996.
The ANU 90bhp engine appeared in Mar 1999, and continued through to the MK2's although the AHU continued for a while only on the MK1's.
The 110bhp AFN engines started to appear in Dec 1996 on the Autos and then in Jan 1997 on the manuals.
They were replaced by the AVG 110bhp engine in Aug 1999 this was replaced when the mk2's appeared.
No 90bhp were produced with Automatic Gearboxes, manual only.

No, you can only say that if it was built before 3/11/97 it must be a 90bhp. After 3/11/97 it could be either because they fitted both 90bhp and 110bhp engines after that date.110 put into vehicles built on or after 03/11/97 'TIS said.

The 110bhp AFN engines started to appear in Dec 1996 on the Autos and then in Jan 1997 on the manuals.
Don't you mean Dec 1997 and Jan 1998 as the 110bhp wasn't introduced until Nov 1997?
If big_kev's information is right then it must be 90bhp because it is a manual and the 110bhp wasn't put into a manual vehicle until Jan 1998.
