Been havin some trouble with my 1998 2.3 GLX galaxy and decided to get some diagnostic stuff. Could anyone tell me if my 1998 model is OBD-II? This question may have been asked before (apologies) but couldn't find out anything with a search. Any help appreciated.

Thanks for that. I knew where the socket was but unsure as to whether it was OBD-II or the older Ford specific protocol.

As with all the Galaxies, Alhambras and Sharans they communicate through the OBDII as they were and still are built by VW and the ecu is VW protocol (OBD!!).

Thats all ok because its VW,,,,,,,,,,but the engine in the 2.3 is Ford and is not OBD-11 ,,,,,, so vag com will not "talk" to the engine,,,,,,,,,

 Great! 2 people say it is OBD2 and 1 says it isn't! I have just ordered an OBD2 interface for my laptop as well. Supose I will find out for sure soon enough! If it isn't OBD2 then what is it then? Anyone know? and can you get anything that WILL talk to it?

as has been stated it is obd2, however it is v/w based but with the ford 2.3. hence vag com. will not communicate to the engine, but will communicate to the other 99% of it.

Does anyone know if something like u585 scanner communicate also with Galaxy engine?

It might, because they list also Ford specific codes from -96.

The handheld scanner does more or less the same job as the OBDII/EOBD interfaces, so it will read engine related codes and data - only the engine diagnostics had to be compliant to satisfy the European directive.

However, it probably won't will work for any of the other bits, such as ABS, SRS, auto gearbox, etc. You need VAG-COM for those bits.

Had a look at the manual for this model scanner http://www.vtoolshop...nner-manual.pdf shows a vag-audi mode that makes it more powerful than typical standalone obdii and does some -maybe most/all- of the functions that vcds does. On the one hand, cheaper than a proper full vcds , has none of the challenges of working with windows and is self-contained - easy to keep in the car. But on the other hand, vcds is proven and has access to a full laptop screen and the ability to log blocks for a long time - and the getting started system cost if you have a laptop is under £10....

Still be interested to know how anybody who gets one finds it.

I got u585 and it works pretty much like I was hoping.

VAG menu works for ABS, climatronic, Airbag, etc.

Basic OBD menu works with -97 Ford 2.0 engine. Scan included fuel system, comprehensive components (=ECU), O2 sensor+heating and egr.
Rest of infos like misfiring seem to be N/A, I guess these infos are stored only with true OBD2 compliant newer ECUs. Live data and Freeze frame aren't supported either with old mk1 ECU.

Useful info, thanks for posting.

FWIW, you can see live data from the Ford engine using a generic OBD2/EOBD interface and ScanTool software.

Interested to hear about the U585 - if I ever decide i need something self-contained I'll consider it first - thanks for the info lle.
Sparky Paul - would you advise me to go for an elm327 based cable to read ford codes? I've looked for something that will work with my kkl lead (which the ad claimed would work with "many other softwares" - I've only found Fiatecuscan) but no joy unless you have any suggestions?

I use a cheap generic elm327 based interface for the engine, it reads the trouble codes and live data from my Ford 2.3 just fine.

I use the VAG-COM KKL for everything else, but it won't work with the Ford engines as the protocols are different..
